The original painting was inspired by those old Florida Lottery tickets I remember from growing up in Miami—the colorful sea creatures, the bold typography, the little slips of paper covered in numbers, and especially the way our family made a whole ritual out of choosing them.
After dinner, usually with a little treat and a cafecito con leche, we’d gather together and call out our numbers.
Birthdays. Anniversaries. Lucky numbers. Dates that meant something to us.
If you look closely at the tickets in this painting, you’ll find 04/01 and 03/28—the birthdays of my grandparents, both born in 1941.
Little details like that are what make this piece so personal to me.
It’s a painting about Florida, family, Cuban-American nostalgia, and those ordinary little traditions that somehow become the memories we carry forever.
Do you remember these old Florida Lottery tickets?
Maybe your family had a system too.
